I’ll wrap this up by saying, if you know you are struggling with your relationship with alcohol, I commend you. It takes an enormous amount of strength to recognize that something is wrong and want to change it, especially in our alcohol-obsessed society. Seek out therapy and/or an AA meeting near you. I was offered a scholarship opportunity to go on to PhD studies in chemistry, but chose to continue on to med school instead. Again, in med school, I sought out and found friends who partied just like me. I am coming up on me one-year anniversary of putting down the booze and my mind is in such a weird place. I was just like you — drinking since high school, always the party girl. Drinking two bottles of wine each weeknight alone, then going out and slamming 10+ beers with friends on weekends. Those wine nights always ended with me crying in bed, begging my brain to free me of the addiction. I’d wake up with the worst anxiety ever, throw up at work, look like I got hit by a train during meetings.

It made me feel powerful, like I was unstoppable. My alcoholism had progressed to the point in which I couldn’t get drunk anymore. The solution I had found to deal with life had failed me. I had a miscarriage, I was so out of touch I didn’t even know that I was pregnant. My University asked me to leave and everything came to a halt. It was the catalyst that led me to surrender.

It was like the vibrancy and color was coming back into my life again, the color that alcohol took away. I was incredibly irritable and depressed because my body was going through alcohol withdrawal and my mind couldn’t comprehend or want a life without the substance.
